THE WISHING TREE

Berlin, 1899. Camilla Hofmann faces the new century with all the brightness and cheer that make her the most cherished daughter of her well-to-do industrialist father Fritz. Yet the 20th century will begin with hardship for the Hofmanns: having gambled away the family fortune, Fritz Hofmann, along with his wife and children, is forced to abandon his palatial villa - but not before Camilla leaves a wish in the trunk of their magnificent "wishing tree". Though Camilla must renounce the love of her life, Steve, to help her family in their time of darkness, her heart later goes out to the gentle Karl, who takes over the Hofmann factory with Camilla. Thanks to their hard work and, in particular, to Camilla's charm and optimism, the couple - who soon marry - transform the firm into a prospering business. The war breaks out; while Karl goes off to fight, Camilla struggles to keep her family together and the factory running. Although she and Steve meet again and rekindle their love, she refuses to leave her husband while he is on the front. But when Karl returns and seeks to regain his footing in the company and his family, Camilla feels pulled to the breaking point between conflicting emotions: her love for Steve, her loyalty to Karl, and her responsibility towards her company:
