The life, loves and works of the great composer, set against the backdrop of the unification of Italy. Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was very much involved in the turbulent events of his time, which saw the end of foreign rule and the advent of changes wrought by industry on an agricultural society. The stirring, thinly-veiled patriotism of his operas frequently ran into trouble with the Austrian censors and made him tremendously popular with his countrymen, although they were not averse to gossiping maliciously about Verdi's affair with soprano Giuseppina Strepponi.
